Equipment – What you need for baby

This is a basic list of what we think you will need to help you care for your baby. There are many ‘extra accessories’ that are designed to make life easier and sometimes first time parents can end up buying more than they actually need. Buying second hand items is often a more affordable way to go.

  • 4 cotton singlets size 0 or 1

  • 2 merino singlets or t shirts

  • 4 nightgowns or all in 1 suits can be made from brushed cotton or merino

  • 3 overpants (optional)

  • 2 knitted jackets/cardigans (wool or merino is best)

  • 2 hats (wool or merino is best)

  • 4 booties/socks can also be used as mittens

  • 1-2 baby shawls or blanket

  • Wraps - can be cloth nappy, muslin or merino but not polar fleece

  • 1 barrier cream like tui bee balm

  • 20 cloth wipes (disposable wipes or chux cloths work well and can be washed

  • Lots of newborn disposable or cloth nappies

  • 1 plastic change pad

  • 1 nappy bag

  • 1 baby bath - can manage without

  • 3 soft bath towels

  • 3 muslin face cloths

  • 1 thermometer

  • 1 rug/blanket for putting on the ground to lay baby on

Transporting

  • 1 car seat - organise before the baby arrives through Plunket, Baby Factory, Baby city, Baby on the move.

  • 1 Pram / buggy - assess your needs: Do you plan to walk/run on rough/smooth terrain? Use public transport? Use the car a lot? Assess your budget and shop around.

  • Accessories - shade cover/storm cover/baby sleep bag

  • Baby carrier - (you can manage without one for the first few months). We recommend Manduca, or Ergo brands and to get a front pack (baby facing towards you, not forward facing). Baby wraps are also great. We recommend you avoid using a sling. Check out for more information go to babywearinginternational.org
